Alternative Provision at Valley View Ranch

A Professional Setting. A Different Environment.

Valley View Ranch offers a structured, high-quality Alternative Provision enabling young people to benefit from a smaller, more practical learning environment than a traditional classroom setting.

The Ranch is a fully operational 5 Star Licenced Western Riding Centre set in the Herefordshire countryside. Our Alternative Provision operates on Mondays and Tuesdays, 10am till 2pm, structured in small groups with 1:4 ratios, and 1:1 capacity where appropriate or required.

Our provision combines clear expectations, strong safeguarding practice and purposeful outdoor learning — with the unique addition of working alongside our American Quarter Horses & Miniature Horses.

We are calm.

We are consistent.

We are professional.

And we do things differently — for the right reasons.

Who We Support

Our provision is suitable for learners aged 8–16+ who may:

  • Be at risk of exclusion or disengagement

  • Require a reduced or alternative timetable

  • Experience social, emotional or mental health needs (SEMH)

  • Have anxiety linked to mainstream school environments

  • Present with low confidence or low self-esteem

  • Have an EHCP requiring a bespoke, practical placement

  • Benefit from structured, hands-on learning

We work closely with commissioning schools and Local Authorities to ensure placements are appropriate, achievable and outcome-focused.

Each learner is treated as an individual, with clear communication between all professionals involved.

Purposeful, Practical Learning

Sessions are designed to provide structure, routine and measurable progress. Activities may include:

  • Horse care and stable management

  • Western riding (where appropriate and chosen)

  • Groundwork and horsemanship skills

  • Team-based outdoor tasks

  • Personal development and responsibility-building activities

  • Life skills and employability-focused learning

We also offer the opportunity to work towards AQA Unit Award Scheme certifications, allowing learners to gain recognised accreditation for practical achievements completed at the ranch.

Progress is tangible. Success is visible.

The Value of Working With Horses

Our American Quarter Horses are carefully trained, steady and experienced. Our American Miniature Horses are a wonderful introduction for young people who may feel nervous around larger animals - their small size and gentle, endearing nature make them especially approachable, helping learners build confidence step by step in way that feels safe, achievable and genuinely enjoyable.

Young people learn to communicate clearly, regulate their behaviour and take responsibility in a calm but structured environment. Horses respond to consistency and boundaries — and in doing so, they reinforce those same qualities in the young person handling them.

For many learners, this environment reduces anxiety and increases engagement in ways traditional classrooms cannot.

Riding, when included, is delivered with careful individual supervision to ensure safety and confidence.

A Professional Framework

Valley View Ranch operates as an established equestrian centre with:

  • Clear safeguarding leadership

  • Designated Safeguarding Lead and Deputy

  • Trained First Aiders on site

  • Robust health and safety systems

  • DBS-checked and trained staff

  • Clear behaviour expectations and structured routines

We provide a safe, organised and accountable setting — with the added benefit of open space, fresh air and meaningful responsibility.

This is not unstructured outdoor time.

It is carefully managed Alternative Provision delivered with professionalism and care.

A Setting With a Difference

Young people here are not defined by past difficulties. They are given:

  • Clear boundaries

  • Real responsibility

  • Respect

  • Encouragement

  • The opportunity to achieve

When a young person learns to lead a horse calmly, complete a task independently, or achieve an accredited award — confidence begins to rebuild.

That is often the first step back into wider education.
